Updating Our Core Organizational Values: An Evolution of Purpose and Belonging

Organizations evolve over time, and the guiding principles that anchor them must grow as well. At a)plan coaching, we believe that organizational values should never sit idly on an office wall or hide inside an unread employee handbook. True principles must breathe life into our daily conversations, guide complex decisions, and shape how we partner with our clients.

Over the past year, we took an intentional pause to reflect on our core organizational values. Facilitated by Dr. Amy Chiang, our Head of Equity, we gathered our coaches and staff to evaluate who we are today and who we want to become. What emerged from this collaborative reflection is a refreshed set of principles rooted in continuous curiosity, deep human connection, and collective responsibility.

A Community-Led Journey to Refresh Our Culture

Any meaningful cultural evolution must start from within. Rather than updating our organizational guideposts behind closed executive doors, we invited our entire community into the conversation. Dr. Amy Chiang, whose background in organizational change focuses on shifting work cultures toward equity and inclusion, led this thoughtful initiative.

The journey began with a comprehensive organization-wide survey, followed by community feedback sessions, including a dedicated coach community meeting. We asked our staff and coaches candid questions: Do our stated values match our lived daily experience? Where has our community grown? What principles need greater clarity to support our expanding ecosystem?

The feedback was inspiring and clear. Our coaches and team members wanted definitions that celebrated ongoing curiosity, centered genuine human connection, and streamlined how we talk about personal agency and alignment. The outcome of this collective inquiry was the introduction of two new values—Learning and Connection—and an intentional clarification of Responsibility.

Why Learning Is Essential to Our Core Organizational Values

Professional growth is rarely a straight line. Too often, corporate environments treat expertise as a fixed destination—a title or credential that you earn and then simply defend. Our coaching community advocated for a value that challenges this rigid mindset and celebrates active, ongoing exploration.

We are proud to introduce Learning as a fundamental organizational anchor:

“We embrace growth as a continuous practice, not a destination. We remain curious, adapt to what we discover, and bring our evolving thinking to the work we do together.”

When we treat personal and professional growth as a continuous practice, we make room for humility, flexibility, and creative innovation. In our coaching engagements, this means remaining curious about what our clients need rather than assuming we hold all the answers. It allows our coaches to experiment, adapt to new insights, and bring forward-thinking frameworks to our work together. By naming Learning as one of our core organizational values, we remind ourselves that being a skilled guide simply means being a dedicated student.

Cultivating Authentic Connection Across Every Community

Coaching is fundamentally an act of relationship. While systems and frameworks matter, real transformation happens only when people feel seen, heard, and supported. To honor this foundation, we introduced Connection to reflect our deep commitment to belonging:

“We cultivate belonging as a foundation for great work—with our clients, our colleagues, and the communities we serve. We show up with presence and care, knowing that connection makes us more effective and more human in everything we do.”

This update deliberately widens our lens. Connection means cultivating belonging across all relationships: internally among our coaching roster and operational staff, and externally with our clients and the broader communities they touch. By showing up with presence and genuine care, we build the trust required to unpack difficult challenges, navigate major career pivots, and foster lasting professional resilience. Connection ensures our work remains grounded in shared humanity.

Reframing Shared Responsibility and Collaborative Alignment

Clarity builds trust across teams. As part of this comprehensive review, we also evaluated our previous value of “Promotion.” While advocating for ideas and championing others remains central to who we are, our community recognized that its core intent belonged within a broader, more unified principle. There was also some confusion about “Promotion” relating to a change in title or role, rather than the intended idea of promoting the growth of others by sharing our best thinking then supporting whatever direction the decision-maker ultimately chooses. We therefore retired “Promotion” as a standalone marker and integrated its alignment concept directly into an expanded definition of Responsibility:

“We take responsibility for our actions and results. We share our best thinking, then support the choice of the decision-maker. We envision then create the future we want, knowing anything is possible.”

This consolidated definition establishes a healthy cadence for teamwork and leadership. It invites every team member to share their sharpest insights, voice diverse viewpoints, and engage in constructive dialogue. Once a final path is chosen, however, it calls for wholehearted alignment behind the decision-maker. This balance of courageous candor and united support enables teams to move forward with clarity and momentum, holding themselves accountable to the shared vision they create together.

Living Our Values Through Excellence with Ease

Revisiting our core organizational values is far more than an internal vocabulary update; it directly enriches the support and partnership our clients experience every day. These refined commitments operate alongside our foundational philosophy of Excellence with Ease. We reject the premise that achieving ambitious goals requires exhaustion, friction, or emotional burnout.

Instead, when an organization anchors itself in active Learning, authentic Connection, and clear Responsibility, it creates conditions where high performance feels natural and sustainable. Whether we are delivering one-on-one leadership development or partnering with enterprises to build inclusive cultures, these principles ensure that we embody the very habits we encourage in others.

We extend our deep gratitude to Dr. Amy Chiang and every member of our coaching community who contributed their time, reflections, and hearts to this initiative. As our organization continues to expand, these values will serve as our steady compass, guiding our mission to help individuals and organizations realize their greatest potential.
